Research Reports

Dark varieties of chocolate contain high levels of catechins, substances with antioxidant properties that may help fight cancer and heart disease. However, it is important to remember that chocolate is full of sugar and fat so enjoy it in moderation.
- A recent report published in The Lancet.

A study of 40 patients diagnosed with influenza found that 90 percent of flu patients who had taken 10 ml of elderberry extract four times a day were completely symptom-free after three days. The symptoms of the untreated patients lasted for six days.
- According to Madeleine Mumeuoglu. Ph.D., the study's lead author and a former virology researcher at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Ginkgo, which is known for promoting memory, actually only helps if the cause of lack of memory is decreased blood flow to the brain. There are several reasons why people have memory loss. If the problem causing the memory loss is hormonal imbalance then ginkgo is not the solution.
- Herbal Remedies for Women (Prima, 1997) by Amanda McQuade.

Cordyceps is a fungus that grows on insects, especially silkworms. It is rare but herbalists in China have known about it for thousands of years. Studies show that the extracts from this fungus can help prolong the life of cancer patients and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy when taken regularly for years. Patients taking cordyceps in conjunction with radiation or chemotherapy showed a higher percentage (85%) of normal blood counts than those who did not take it (59%).

Heart Disease

Our February newsletter was about heart disease. I just want to tell you folks a little of my own knowledge and experience with heart disease:
I was eating healthy foods and running 7 miles every other day. Never thinking that I could be a candidate for a heart attack. On February 11 of this year, I had a heart attack. I forgot several important factors:  I was only running every other day and my diet was the same on the day that I didn't run. I figured the running was burning any excess fat that I had eaten and I got careless and not really keeping track of the fat I was consuming. I'm not a spring chicken any longer and my metabolism has slowed down considerably. My body was not burning the fat like it used to when I was younger. My brain got in the way of my heart and I suffered the consequences.
Since my heart attack, I have learned a lot about heart disease. Anyone with heart disease need to eat a low fat, high fiber diet. I keep my fat down to 30 fat grams per day. I try to eat 10 fat grams per meal, 3 times per day. Lots of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts and grains. Four ounces of meat per day. There are low fat and no fat products on the market today if you really need to have sweets. My wife fixes me fat free pancakes on the weekends and fruit jellies, jams, fruit toppings and maple syrup that don't have fat in them! I can eat 2 soft boiled eggs per week, so I generally eat one on Saturday and one on Sunday with my fat free pancakes. I have lost 15 pounds in the last 2 months, which I didn't think I needed to lose any weight.

Exercise!

Aerobic type exercise is the the best type of exercise to rev-up the cardiovascular system. Walking briskly or Jogging that will increase your heart rate by 30 to 40 beats per minute over your normal heart rate for a period of 30 to 40 minutes every day for six out of seven days per week. Warm up by walking slow for the first 5 minutes and cool down by walking slow again for the last 5 minutes with 30 to 40 minutes of brisk exercise in between the warm up and cool down. The day of your rest, you should still do some type of exercising but not aerobic unless you want to at a slower pace. Ask your health professional person or doctor what your target heart rate should be and make sure you keep within that target range. Mine is 108 to 120 heart beats per minute. That will increase in a couple more weeks. A constant steady pace with increases every week or so. You can also check yourself with a chart I used at the cardiac rehab when I just starting out before I got a target heart rate. It is called "Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale or RPE Scale,When using the rating scale, do not become preoccupied with any one factor such as leg discomfort or labored breathing, but try to concentrate on your total inner feeling of exertion. A rating of 6 indicates a minimum level of exertion. A rating of 20 corresponds to a maximal effort, for example, it is like you have just run out of burning building at an all out sprint. You are now so fatigued that you cannot take another step.
I hope what I have said will help someone out there doing and thinking the same way I did.
