Native Americans used herbs extensively for health and healing. Black cohosh was used to ease childbirth, for painful periods, menopause,l hot flashes and rheumatism. Black cohosh has formononetin which binds to estrogen receptors, making an estrogen-like activity in the body. Black cohosh may help during menopause when estrogen decreases. - Georgiana Duncan, Sunshine Journal, April/2000. Are childhood immunizations responsible for some illnesses? The controversy over the safety of immunizations for children has become so strong that Newsweek magazine addressed the issue in an article about the dramatic increase in incidents of autism in the United States. Statistics show that autism now rates above childhood cancer and Down's syndrome in numbers, affecting one person in 500. While the writers in Newsweek state that "experts say [families] shouldn't ... blame the MMR shot for the disorder," it certainly seems significant that the issue was mentioned at all. Colloidal Silver, proven to be one of the most effective natural and safe antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial products known, was in danger of being taken off of the public market, but the FDA has approved its continued use in the U.S. According to Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist and silver researcher, "Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have." Because of public outcry against Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), U.S. farmers are reported to be planting fewer acres of GMO crops this year and the planned new governmental standards for Organic Certification excludes the use of GMOs in any form. Consumers are being reminded to keep up the pressure on government officials to protect the public's health and right to know that the term "Certified Organic" will always mean that the product has not been tampered with in any manner.
A study published in the Archives of Dermatology reports that herbal essential oils can stimulate hair growth. In a study, 44% of subjects who used lotions containing oils of thyme, lavender, rosemary and cedar showed significant hair growth, compared to those using a placebo, with no side effects reported.
A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that American ginseng taken forty minutes before a meal caused a 20% drop in blood sugar levels. In another study published in Diabetes Care, Panax ginseng was shown to improve mood, reduce blood glucose levels and body weight. No side effects were observed. Ginseng has been used for diabetes in Oriental medicine.
A case for Whole Herbs. Could it be that the whole, natural herb is what makes it work? "Scientists are often unable to determine which chemical or combination of chemicals within a plant is responsible for relieving pain or stimulating blood flow or creating a feeling of increased well-being. Trying to find the part of a plant that has a specific effect can be like disassembling a radio to search for the one part that makes the sound."
High cholesterol may be caused by an underactive thyroid! When thyroid hormone levels are too low, the liver makes fewer LDL receptors whose job it is to pull "bad" cholesterol out of the blood. The result is a high cholesterol count, which increases the risk of heart disease. Studies show that up to 14% of cases of high cholesterol may be caused by an underactive thyroid. Need an energy boost? Eat better. Complex carbohydrates like whole grain, breads and cereals, beans, fruits and vegetables are slowly broken down into glucose, creating a steady supply of energy. Refined foods and sweets boost bloodsugar levels right away. You feel better for a few minutes but then energy drops again.- Kathleen Fry, M.D., a gynecologist & President of the American Holistic Medical Association.
Sick of dry skin? Omega-3-rich fish oil was found in a Finnish study to fend off dry, flaky skin. Take four to six capsules daily or eat more cold-water fish like salmon.
British researchers recently conducted a study that involved twenty people who complained of tiredness or fatigue. They were given 135 to 235 mg of St. John's Wort daily. After two weeks, each person reported a significant reduction in fatigue. After six weeks, they reported even more improvement.
In a study involving 60 patients with ulcer symptoms and H. pylori infection, eight out of the 27 patients who took 5 grams of vitamin C per day successfully eradicated the H. pylori infection. In the control group, who took antacids, none of the patients improved. Low concentrations of vitamin C in gastric juice have been linked with H. pylori infection. |
