Autoimmunity is the underlying cause of more than 80 chronic diseases. A few of them include; Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, Crohn's Disease, Fibromyalgia, Graves' Disease, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sarcoidosis, and Insulin Dependant Diabetes. According to a November 1996 Journal of American Medical Association report, 100 million Americans are suffering from some form of chronic illness ranging from autoimmune disorders to cancer.

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) is a chronic inflammatory illness. Since chronic fatigue is a major symptom in many other illnesses, especially those that are autoimmune, other diseases that are usually ruled out before the diagnosis of CFIDS is made are lupus, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, AIDS, depression. This illness is also called chronic fatigue syndrome or chronic Epstein-Barr virus. It effects twice as many women as men. It is not considered to be easily contagious from one person to another.
Fibromyalgia has recently gained recognition as a distinct disease. Patients commonly complain of pain and tenderness, fatigue, and exhaustion after minimal effort. They often feel tired after sleep. In the United States, three to six million people may be afflicted with fibromyalgia and an estimated 15 to 20 percent of patients (90 percent of them women) seen in rheumatology practice have fibromyalgia.
Graves' Disease is a glandular autoimmune disease affecting the thyroid gland. The autoantibodies bind to the thyroid gland to induce an increase in the production of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone plays a major role in the metabolism, which is the regulation of the body's ability to utilize fuel. Again, this disease is more prevalent in women. Symptoms include nervousness, heat intolerance, diarrhea, sweating, insomnia, and weight loss with increased appetite. In severe cases the symptoms may be irregular heart beat, increased heart beat, intense light sensitivity, swollen legs and eyes, and even coma.
Lupus can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, heart, nervous system, blood, and /or other body organs or systems. Nearly a half million Americans are diagnosed with lupus. There are several types of lupus. Discoid lupus affects the skin with rash and lesions, usually across the face and upper part of the body. Systemic lupus can attack any body organ or system, such as joints, kidneys, brain, heart and lungs. If not controlled, it can be life-threatening. Drug-induced lupus is caused by a reaction to medication. When medication is discontinued, the lupus symptoms usually disappear.
Multiple Sclerosis is another chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease. The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the myelin sheath of the nerves are destroyed. The inflammation causes a wide range of neurological symptoms. It also causes the nerves to have an inability to transmit nervous system signals. MS affects anywhere from 200,000 to 350,000 people each year.
Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most difficult autoimmune diseases to control. It mostly affects the small joints of the hands. Inflammation and thickening of the tissue that lines the joints causes pain and swelling and may deform and finally disable the bones.
Sarcoidosis may affect many body systems. Symptoms include small round spots of dead tissue on the face and limbs. It also causes large protein deposits to form in the lungs. Not all cases are alike. Some have many symptoms and others experience few. Sometimes it can go away without treatment. About 25,000 cases have been diagnosed in the United States.
Insulin Dependant Diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease that usually begins in childhood. It is not the most common form of diabetes, only five percent or less of the diabetics in this country have insulin-dependent Diabetes. However, it has a much greater impact on a person's life than the adult-onset type of diabetes.
The key is to understand the given autoimmune disease and then establish a treatment plan. If you have an autoimmune disease remember that chronic illness usually has ups and downs and can be emotionally draining. Give yourself time to adjust. Don't feel guilty about being sick. Join a support group that accepts alternative natural approaches to these illnesses. Lastly, follow a healthy diet and seek clean air and water. Good nutrition is vital to managing these conditions.

Autoimmune Disorders

Immunity means, essentially, resistance to disease. Usually, immunity comes through exposure to the disease. The immune system is like our own built in ambulance or police force. Its job is to pursue, locate, identify and wipe out disease-causing organisms, such as bacteria and viruses. While fighting these ailments the body produces symptoms of illness like fever, uneasiness, queasiness, exhaustion and general sickness.

One type of immune problem that occurs is when the system overreacts to some thing harmless, as with allergies. The opposite occurs when the immune system fails to respond adequately, resulting in immunodeficiency diseases like AIDS. According to medical thinking, autoimmune disorders come from an overactive immune system. The immune system mistakes healthy tissues for foreign invaders and attacks them. In other words, the "troops" attack their own, instead of attacking the enemy.
Autoimmunity is not uncommon. In fact, it exists in all of us. Whenever the body fights something, a small amount of damage is inflicted on healthy body tissues. In autoimmune disorders, severe damage is being inflicted on healthy tissue causing debility and pain. As a result, medical treatment for autoimmune diseases usually involves therapies that depress or inhibit the immune system response.
Many things may contribute to autoimmune disorders. Here are some of the suspected factors: chemical poisoning (household pollutants, mercury amalgam fillings, aspartame, drugs, pollution), Immunizations, poor diet, microorganisms (viruses and yeast in particular), emotional or physical trauma and stress, spinal subluxations. It is possible that the body cells being attacked are actually carrying toxic material or viruses that the body is attempting to eliminate. One theory is that vaccines may introduce viruses that settle in weak areas of the body and damage the spinal sheath which can flare up later as autoimmune disorders. In particular, the polio virus may be at the root of many of these illnesses.
The immune system may also be out of whack because the body is toxic and deficient in many nutrients. The lack of nutrients may confuse the immune response. Also, the body protects itself from its own immune activity through the use of free radical scavengers or antioxidants. If these nutrients are low, then normal immune responses may cause damaged to surrounding tissues. Another factor may be the suppression of normal immune functions through drugs or other chemicals. To address the many possible causes, the pages that follow contain valuable suggestions about natural remedies you can use to help correct these problems.

Natural Therapy for Autoimmune Disorders

Although the medical profession claims there is no cure for autoimmune disorders, many people have found the following therapies useful in improving the quality of their lives and putting these illnesses into remission. When medicine covers up the symptoms, instead of addressing the causes, natural therapies are worth trying.

Make Lifestyle Changes

Although we'll provide useful suggestions for supplements in this newsletter, we cannot emphasize enough that supplements aren't enough in working with autoimmune disorders. Lifestyle changes are essential.
For starters, the mind is a very powerful tool for helping to reprogram your immune system. First by acknowledging that there is an imbalance in the body and using tools such as prayer, meditation, guided visualization and positive thinking can all contribute to recovery.
Dietary changes are a must. People with autoimmune disorders generally show improvement on a low fat, high fiber diet, based primarily on fruits and vegetables. Many times they have food allergies, particularly to gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Hydrogenated oils are also an aggravant. Dairy and soy allergies are also common. Shellfish should be avoided.
Exercise is important in keeping the body flexible. The best exercises for people with autoimmune disorders are gentle, whole body exercises like yoga, tai'chi, swimming and walking. It is important to keep moving and stretching to keep blood and oxygen flowing to the cells. Hard, strenuous exercise should be avoided as it can cause a relapse.
Massage therapy is very important to easing pain in many autoimmune disorders. Have the massage therapist work trigger points, lymphatic movement and release "locked" muscles.
Rest is very important. Don't be ashamed if you need to nap a couple of hours during the day or lay down for ten minutes every hour.
Heat can aggravate autoimmune symptoms. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, heating pads, electric blankets and tanning beds.
Avoid toxins, including, but not limited to mercury fillings, immunizations (especially flu shots) and the formaldehyde and other chemicals used in new furniture, carpets and building materials. Coffee should also be avoided. Green tea, however, may be helpful.

Balance the Immune System:
But Don't Stimulate It!

In autoimmune disorders, we need to balance the immune system, not stimulate it. This is an important distinction. Herbs like echinacea and goldenseal will often aggravate the symptoms of people suffering from autoimmune disorders. It is the tonic herbs that act as adaptogens and normalizers that are helpful for autoimmune diseases. These are herbs like licorice, ganoderma or reshi mushrooms, Siberian ginseng, cordyceps and pau d'arco.
A very powerful product for balancing the immune system is Chinese Mineral Chi Tonic. NSP Manager Jennifer Wiess has found this product particularly helpful in cases of autoimmune disorders.
Purify the Blood

Gentle blood purifiers or small doses of strong blood purifiers also appear to be helpful for many people with autoimmune disorders. Blood purifiers or alteratives are herbs that help to clear up morbid conditions in the body without causing a purging of the bowel. They are helpful for removing toxins from the body.
Some good single herbs with mild alterative properties include: sarsaparilla, red clover and pau d'arco. One capsule of Enviro-Detox, a blood purifying formula, per day may be helpful for fibromyalgia.
Improve Digestion

Digestive tract care should always be implemented with autoimmune disorders as digestive weakness is common in these conditions. Plant enzymes can be taken with meals to help break down various types of foods and alleviate stress from the digestive system. Proactazyme is the best all around choice for long term use. Food Enzymes are also helpful for many people. Take Proactazyme at the beginning of a meal. If you choose to use Food Enzymes, take them at the end of the meal.
Since fat digestion is often a problem in autoimmune disorders, Hi-Lipase should also be considered. This formula contains enzymes that help the body break down and utilize fats in the diet.
Use Antioxidants

Antioxidant herbs and nutrients may also be needed to help those who suffer from autoimmune disorders. These nutrients help to buffer the immune response and keep damage to healthy tissues at a minimum.
Vitamin C is very important and should ideally be taken in a buffered  (time release)  form along with citrus bioflavonoids. Beta Carotene is another important antioxidant found in green leafy vegetables, carrots, apricots, beets, broccoli, and Swiss Chard. NSP has a product called Beta Carotene with Mixed Carotenoids, which combines beta carotene, lutein, lycopene, alpha carotene, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. It is also important to remember that the body needs more vitamin E when taking Beta Carotene supplements.
A very helpful antioxidant is green tea. The polyphenols in green tea possess a very potent antioxidant effect and green tea, taken as a beverage, has helped people suffering from autoimmune disorders. NSP's green tea extract is a standardized extract of polyphenols.
Reduce Inflammation

Natural anti-inflammatories are an absolute necessity, especially if one wishes to avoid the drug medications typically given for these disorders. Some of the best antiinflammatory herbs for autoimmune disorders include white willow, chamomile, licorice root and wild yam. Of these, one of the most useful is licorice root. This sweet-tasting herb is good for inflammation, fatigue, fibrosis, hypoglycemia, lupus, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease and many other ailments. Both licorice and wild yam have been successfully used as alternatives to steroidal drugs. As an antiinflammatory take two capsules of either or both three times daily.
Although Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroiton and MSM are antiinflammatory, they should be avoided in most cases of autoimmune disorders as the sulphur in these products may cause symptom aggravation after a time. If they are used, they should be taken in small doses and the body should be given periodic and frequent breaks from the products.
IF-C (Anti-Inflammatory Chinese) is designed for conditions involving heat and inflammation and is a strong alterative, so it may be helpful for calming acute flare-ups involving swelling, redness and pain.
Another useful antioxidant is Grapine. Nature's Sunshine's High Potency Grapine uses maritime pine bark extract and grape seed extract for maximum antioxidant effects. Take one mg daily for every pound of body weight.
Use Nervines for Pain

Besides antiinflammatories, a number of nervine herbs can also be employed to help ease pain and relax tense muscles and joints. These include kava kava, St. John's wort, ginkgo biloba and gotu kola. While most people think of ginkgo and gotu kola as brain food, they are also helpful nervines. In particular, gotu kola is a valuable tonic and is used for serious diseases such as leprosy in India.
Strengthen the Glands

The glands may need to be strengthened when dealing with autoimmunity as well. Bee Pollen has every known nutrient in trace amounts. It is highly energizing and is recommended for building the immune system, stamina and endurance. It supports the glands and helps with capillary weakness.
Black walnut, kelp and dulse supply iodine to the thyroid. Iodine plays an important role in killing harmful microorganisms in the body. NSP's KC-X is an excellent thyroid formula.
DHEA supplementation has proven helpful in some cases of autoimmune disorders, especially lupus. It is the most abundant of all hormones in the body and is produced in the adrenal glands, which are often weak in patients suffering these afflictions.
Other Supplements

A high quality source of essential fatty acids is important in treating autoimmune disorders. Seed oils are the best. Consider any of the following: evening primrose oil, flax seed oil, black currant oil, hemp seed oil or borage seed oil.
Fibralgia is a useful product for fibromyalgia. It contains magnesium and malic acid and can help to reduce inflammation and pain in the muscles.
The following nutrients may be very helpful for auto-immune disorders: niacinamide (niacin is too heating), mineral abscorbates (potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium), GTF chromium (but not chromium picolinate), Thymus Glandular and Mega Chel. Mega Chel in small amounts (1/2 tablet per day) is useful for several reasons. First, it is an excellent source of antioxidant nutrients and second, it can help to remove heavy metals from the body.
Homeopathic remedies may also be useful, particularly Detoxifying, Allergies and Viral Immunity. These remedies may help to normalize immune function.
Topically, the following aromatherapy oils may be helpful for easing pain and inflammation: Deep Relief, Clary Sage and a mixture of lavender, bergamont, rose and Roman chamomile. Ylang ylang, geranium, lemon and thyme should be avoided as they stimulate the immune system. Clove should be avoided internally, but may be used topically as part of a pain-relieving combination.
