Zinc is important to the growth of the fetus. A study done at the University of Alabama found that women who took zinc during pregnancy gave birth to babies with larger head circumferences than women who didn't take zinc. - The Natural Way (March/April 1996) A group at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center studied the effects of spirulina on cancer. They gave one gram spirulina capsules daily to 44 people in India who had precancerous lesions. After a year the sores were gone as compared to the placebo group who still had the sores. A five year study found that men who ate cooked tomato products had lower risk of prostate cancer. The study found that the more cooked tomatoes the better, but eating just four servings per week equaled a 22 percent reduction in cancer risk. St. John's Wort works as an antidepressant without side effects. Studies show that depressed patients taking this herb have fewer adverse reactions during treatment than those taking prescription drugs. Ginkgo biloba may be helpful for people suffering with Alzheimers. 40 patients with Alzheimers were given 80mg of Ginkgo biloba extract 3 times daily. Over 3 months the patients had improved memory and attention. In a study comparing healthy persons to persons with melanoma, epidemiologist Constance Kirkpatrick, PH.D. found that the skin cancer was associated with low intake of vitamin E. Zinc was also found to be important in decreasing risk of skin cancer. 17,321 Harvard alumni were the focus of a study looking at the relationship between physical activity and longevity. The study found that the amount of energy expended from vigorous activities (such as brisk walking, swimming laps, playing tennis, etc.) was "inversely related to mortality." That's Harvard talk for "those who didn't exercise didn't live as long!" Michael Murray, N.D., says that chronic prostate problems are linked to a lack of dietary zinc. He recommends taking 60 mg. of zinc daily. Dr. Murray also recommended eating raw pumpkin seeds. They are rich in zinc and also contain fatty acids which are necessary for keeping the prostate healthy. Sixty-four patients with skin burns were randomly assigned either a dressing of honey and gauze or a traditional dressing of amniotic membrane and gauze.
