Getting to the
HEART of Your HEALTH
America's #1 Killer:
Cardiovascular Disease
- by Jim Riddle
Heart-Stopping Stats
Statistics show that cardiovascular disease is
America's leading health problem. Consider the most recent
statistics released by the American Heart Association:
- 71 million Americans suffer from some form of
heart disease.
- 1 in 3 people suffer from some form of
cardiovascular disease.
- 1 out of every 2.7 deaths is a result of
cardiovascular disease.
- 2,600+ Americans die of cardiovascular disease
each day, an average of one death every 34 seconds.
- The number one killer of both men and women is
cardiovascular disease.
- Every 45 seconds, someone in the U.S. suffers
a stroke.
- Every 3 minutes, someone dies from a
stroke.
- 50% of all patients hospitalized for a
neurological disease have suffered a stroke.
- $431.8 billion-the estimated economic cost of
cardiovascular diseases in the U.S. in 2007.
- Cardiovascular disease is the cause of more
deaths than the next five most prevalence causes of death
combines.
|
- Since 1963, the American Heart Association (AHA), in congress
with the Office of the President of the United States, has
declared February as Heart Month. Health practitioners are
encouraged to emphasize heart health education with their
patients and clients in an effort to stem the epidemic of heart
and vascular disease in America. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is
the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. It
is vital to learn more about your heart in order to help prevent
heart disease and related health issues. If you or your loved
ones already suffer from CVD, learning more about your condition
can help you live a healthier, more satisfying life. Also, you
can empower yourself by becoming a more active participant in
your care.
- The term "heart Disease" is most often associated
with coronary artery disease (narrowing of the arteries leading
to the heart), but coronary artery disease is just one type of
cardiovascular disease. CVD includes a number of conditions
affecting the structures or function of the heart and blood
vessels. While many cardiovascular diseases affect individuals
worldwide, the following describes some of the most common
conditions and their symptoms.
Coronary Artery
Disease
- Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition where
atherosclerosis (the buildup of fat and cholesterol known as
plaque on the inner walls of blood vessels, causes decreased
blood flow and hardening in the arteries that provide vital
oxygen and nutrients to the heart. Left untreated, CAD can lead
to myocardial infarction (MI, heart attack), where blood flow is
dramatically decreased to areas of the heart, causing damage to
the heart muscle and sometimes resulting in death. The primary
symptom of CAD is angina, described as discomfort, heaviness,
pressure, aching, burning, fullness, squeezing or a painful
feeling in your chest. It can sometimes be felt in the shoulders,
arms, neck, throat, jaw or back. Other symptoms can include
shortness of breath, palpitations (irregular heart beats), a
faster heartbeat, weakness or dizziness, nausea and
sweating.
Heart Failure
- Heart failure is a term used to describe a condition where
the heart is not pumping blood as effectively as it should. Heart
failure is the leading cause of hospitalization of Americans over
the age of 65. Over half a million new cases of heart failure are
diagnosed each year with an estimated 5 million Americans living
with the disease. Symptoms of heart failure can include shortness
of breath, especially during activity or when lying down flat in
bed, coughing that produces whit colored mucus, rapid weight gain
(up to 2-3 lbs. per day), swelling in the ankles, legs and
abdomen, dizziness, fatigue and weakness, and rapid or irregular
heartbeats.
Abnormal Heart
Rhythms
- When functioning properly, the heart beats in a steady, even
rhythm, about 60 to 100 times each minute. When the heart beats
irregularly, it is called an arrhythmia. An arrhythmia can also
cause a very slow or very fast heartbeat. Symptoms can include
palpitations, or "skipped beats," pounding in the
chest, dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain and
weakness.
Cardiomyopathy or Heart
Muscle Disease
- Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle itself.
Cardiomyopathy describes the condition of the heart where it is
larger, has thicker walls or lacks elasticity. Any of these
conditions will prevent the heart from working optimally.
Symptoms are similar to those of heart failure but are often less
pronounced and can sometimes go unnoticed. Like most heart
diseases, if left untreated, the symptoms can worsen and lead to
more serious conditions and even death.
Hypertension
- Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against blood
vessel walls. The higher your blood pressure, the harder your
heart is forced to work to supply the body with blood. This
condition is called hypertension and it can damage the heart and
blood vessels. It can also lead to conditions such as heart
attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, vision problems
and the development of atherosclerosis.
What Should My Blood
Pressure Be?
Normal: Less than 120/80
Pre-hypertension: 120-139/80-80
Stage 1 hypertension: 140-159/90-99
Stage 2 hypertension: 160 and above/100 and above
People whose blood pressure is above the normal range should
consult their health practitioner to develop a plan to lower
it. |
- Several factors can contribute to the development of
hypertension. Smoking, being overweight, lack of exercise,
high-sodium diets, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, age and
genetics can all promote hypertension in the body. Unfortunately,
hypertension often has no symptoms and can therefore go largely
unnoticed. The AHA estimates that nearly on-third of those who
have high blood pressure are unaware that they have it. The only
way to know for sure is to have your blood pressure checked
regularly.
Peripheral Artery
Disease
- Just like the vessels that supply blood to your heart, blood
vessels that supply the rest of your body can develop
atherosclerosis. Eventually the affected blood vessels can fail
to provide enough oxygen to tissues in the body, causing a
condition called ischemia that can cause cellular death in the
affected tissues. If this happens in the carotid arteries or
other vessels that supply blood to the brain, it can result in a
type of stroke. If a blockage develops in the legs, one can
suffer from debilitating leg pain and cramping, skin color
changes, sores or ulcers, and extreme leg fatigue. If the
blockage is severe, it can result in the loss of the limb. A
blockage in the arteries that supply the kidneys can cause
uncontrolled hypertension, heart failure and abnormal kidney
function.
TIPS FOR A HEART-HEALTHY
LIFESTYLE
- Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all of
the food groups. Focus especially on vegetables, fruits,
whole-grain products, fat-free or low-fat dairy products and
fish.
- Choose lean meats at the grocery
store.
- Cut back on nutrient-poor foods and foods with
partially hydrogenated vegetable oil/trans fats.
- aim for less than 300 milligrams of
cholesterol per day in your diet.
- Cut back on food and beverages with added
sugars.
- Avoid seasoning your food with
salt.
- Lose weight or maintain your ideal weight.
Extra pounds on the body make your heart work harder.
- Aim to get 30 minutes of moderate activity at
least five days a week.
- Avoid alcohol.
- Don't smoke, and stay away from tobacco
smoke whenever possible.

Blood Clots
- The ability to form clots in the blood is essential to good
health. Without it, even the smallest cuts could be fatal.
Unfortunately, certain conditions can lead to the clotting of
blood in our veins that can cause serious health concerns. Long
bed rest, damage to the veins from injury or infection, valve
damage in the veins, pregnancy, hormone therapies (such as
estrogen or birth control) and genetic disorders can sometimes
lead to the formation of clots in the veins. This can slow blood
flow and thicken the blood. Clots can also detach from the walls
of veins and later become lodged in the smaller vessels of the
lungs (pulmonary embolism). This is a serious condition that can
sometimes cause death.
Varicose
Veins
- Varicose veins are enlarged, purple, ropy veins, visible just
under the skin, most often occurring in the legs. Spider veins,
small red or purple bursts on the knees, calves or thighs, are
closely related to varicose veins and are simply smaller versions
of the same. They are more common among women than men and can
often be a genetic problem. Pregnancy, being overweight or
regularly standing for long periods of time can also increase
their occurrence.
