The current U.S. Recommended Daily Value of vitamin D is 400IU, which many feel to be inadequate. Those standards are being reviewed by universities, research institutes and university hospitals around the world, which may likely result in an increase in the Recommended Daily Value of vitamin D. A review published in the New England Journal of Medicine recommends the government standard be increased to 800-1,000 IU per day.
Another study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition called for international agencies to reassess as a matter of high priority their dietary recommendations for vitamin D, because the formal nationwide advice from health agencies needs to be changed. The balance of the evidence leads to the conclusion that the public health is best served by a recommendation of higher daily intakes of vitamin D. That article suggests that the tolerable upper intake level be increased to 10,000 IU per day. NSP Vitamin D3 provides a safe amount of 2,000 IU per tablet.
